Samaria gorge

This excursion to discover the Samaria Gorge, the most majestic gorge in Europe. Get ready to find unforgettable impressions!
Having left early in the morning, we will make our first stop near Rethymno, where you will have the opportunity to have a breakfast and then continue our way to the plateau Omalos. The walk will start from the town of Xyloskalo, from where we will enter the 18-kilometer canyon, considered the longest in Europe. Usually it takes 6-7 hours to cross the rocky gorge and get to the coast.

The route passes along the bed of the ancient Taras River. Along the way, you will see the caves, which served as a natural refuge for the inhabitants of Crete during the war, and are now the natural habitat for the famous Cretan mountain goats – Cree Cree. Halfway we will meet the village of Samarya, now abandoned. Three kilometers before leaving this grandiose gorge, we will get to the Iron Gate (Sideroportes), the narrowest section of the route, just a few meters wide but 300 meters high. A little later we will come to the small fishing village of Agia Rumeli, where we will have enough time to have lunch and refresh ourselves in the Libyan Sea before we board the boat that takes us to the village of Hora Sfakion.
It’s very important to have hiking boots, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a spare pair of socks, a swimsuit and a light jacket.
