History of Santorini

The human presence on the island seems to have existed since the middle of the 3rd millennium B.C. The excavation at Akrotiri has confirmed that man’s activity on the island continued until the eruption of the volcano in around 1600 B.C., which entirely buried the island beneath very thick layers of pozzolanic ash. Thera became an important point on the communication route between the East and the West of that era and adopted the Phoenician alphabet for writing the Greek language. In Hellenistic times the island’s strategic position made Thera a precious base from which the warring campaigns of the successors of Alexander the Great were launched in the Aegean. Within the Roman Empire, it was nothing more than an insignificant small island.
However, Christianity reached the island and an organized church already existed by the 4th century A.C. The name Santorini was given by the Crusaders after the church of Agia Irini (Santa Irene) which some say was at Perissa and others say was at Riva on Thirasia.

The Famous Volcano

Visit the volcano of Thira which is still active! The present-day crescent shape of the island is a consequence of the activity of the volcano in prehistoric times feeding the myth of the lost Atlantis. Santorini is essentially what remains of an enormous volcanic explosion dating back 3,600 years and which created the current geological caldera; a giant central lagoon, more or less rectangular, and measuring about 12 by 7 km, surrounded by 300 m high steep cliffs on three sides. The mild activity of the volcano after this major eruption has built up two small islands within the caldera, Palea and Nea Kameni visited by hundreds of people every day during the tourist season. The impressive caldera dominates the west part of the island while the marvelous dry climate and the almost continuous sunshine create year-around conditions which are perfect for observation, photographs and videos under an extraordinary variety of natural lights and colors.

During our Sunset tour you can sit on board in romantic atmosphere, drink glass of wine and watch vibrant sunset over Saint George Bay at Hersonessos. You will enjoy breathtaking view of the colorful sky as the day gives way to the night. It’s the perfect way to relax and take in the beauty of the surroundings. The Sunset tour starts at 6pm and lasts 2.5 hours.

You will follow a course of instructions (duration of about 45 minutes) given by an instructor speaking French, English, German, Dutch or Greek. Other languages are on request. He will explain you the basics of scuba diving and the most important things to know before going under water. After the theory you will be split in small groups of 4 people experiencing their fist dive, guided by 3 diving professionals.

You will never be left alone from us under the water! “Step-by-Step” our guides will introduce you to a new world full of fascination during a dive of 45 minutes and a maximum depth of 10 meters. During the tour we will show you the inhabitants of the Mediterranean sea like sponges, sea stars, octopus, snails, different kind of fishes and with a little bit of luck you will also see dolphins, barracudas or seahorses.

Before and after your unforgettable experience you have the possibility to take your lunch in one of the taverns, and stay on the beach

We depart from Agios Nikolaos heading east with the Gulf of Mirabello on our left side. We go through Istron and the stunning beaches of Karavostasi, Agios Panteleimonas and Golden beach Voulisma and we arrive at the village of Kavousi.

We continue uphill to the Minoan settlement of Azoria where the oldest olive tree in the world is located‼

We descend to the mouth of the mindboggling Richtis Gorge. We follow an amazing trail within the gorge and we reach the falls of Richtis. Wonderful images that they worth the effort of walking along the trail, which leads to a pebbled beach. The hike is very easy even for young children.

On our way back, we stop at Voulisma Beach. It’s the Blue flag awarded beach and one of the most beautiful beaches on the island!

Our first stop is at the village of Kritsa, famous for its long history since the era of the ancient city of LATO until the Ottoman times. The village features the important religious monument of Panagia KERA, which dates back to the 12th century.

We continue towards Katharo Plateau (altitude 1200m) through the cypress forest where we see goats, sheep and if we get lucky, we may even witness Cretan vultures in the wild. It is an excellent occasion to take photos of the MIRA A BELO Gulf, a name given by the Venetians and means “beautiful view”.

We then move southwards to Selakano forest, which is famous for the unique, high quality honey that is produced there.

We will cool off at Sarakina Gorge, a gorge of easy access for all. Photos of this breathtaking landscape will impress your friends.

We continue towards the southernmost point in Europe, that is, the fishing village of Myrtos. It is time for a swim, shopping or a cup of tea by the Libyan Sea.

Be sure to bring your sneakers, a towel and sunscreen with you and of course to fully charge your cameras.

The experience starts from the cosmopolitan city of Agios Nikolaos and heads West to the traditional village of Kritsa, a historic village rich in legends, gorges, archeological and religious monuments and monuments. We continue uphill through the pine forest and reach the Lower Plateau (altitude 1250m), a plateau famous for the Cretan dwarf hippopotamus fossils found in the area. The plateau has a wonderful landscape surrounded by many legends and stories dating back to the Ottoman era.

Our next destination is the impressive Lassithi Plateau (altitude 1150m). More than 10,000 traditional windmills operated in the area until a few decades ago. In the 1950s and 1960s, the Plateau was actually one of the first wind farms in Europe. The Diktaio Cave, that is, the birthplace of Zeus, is located in the village of Psychro (altitude 840m).

As we descend, we make a short stop in the village of Krasi and photograph the favorite plane of the famous Cretan writer Nikos Kazantzakis. The perimeter of the plane tree is about 24 meters and is estimated to be 2400 years old. It is also said that each measure of its perimeter corresponds to the age of 100 years.
